Functional Dermatology and
Root-Cause Skin Care in Boston
What is Functional Dermatology?
Functional dermatology is an integrative approach to skin and scalp health that looks beyond the visible symptom to explore the internal and external factors that may be contributing to persistent or recurring concerns.

The skin does not function separately from the rest of the body. Acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, pigmentation, hair thinning, and premature aging may be influenced by several overlapping factors, including skin-barrier dysfunction, inflammation, nutrient status, digestion, hormonal patterns, stress, sleep, lifestyle, environmental exposures, and the products or treatments being used.

At Integrative Aesthetics Boston, we combine professional skin assessment, corrective skincare, functional wellness evaluation, nutrition and lifestyle guidance, and advanced treatments when appropriate. The goal is not simply to suppress what is visible, but to create a coordinated plan that supports skin-barrier health, whole-body wellness, and long-term skin resilience.

This approach does not assume that every skin condition has one single root cause. Instead, we evaluate the full pattern, identify the most relevant contributing factors, and address them in a thoughtful and clinically appropriate sequence.
If you’ve maintained a clean diet, minimized trigger foods, used non-toxic skincare, and prioritized self-care, yet still struggle with your skin, functional dermatology invites us to look deeper into the body-skin connection for clues about potential imbalances.
Skin and Scalp Concerns We Commonly Support
Our functional dermatology approach may be appropriate for individuals experiencing persistent, recurring, or complex skin and scalp concerns, including:

-
Adult and adolescent acne
-
Rosacea, facial redness, and reactive skin
-
Eczema and chronic skin-barrier disruption
-
Psoriasis support
-
Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
-
Seborrheic dermatitis and recurrent scalp flaking
-
Hair thinning and scalp-health concerns
-
Keratosis pilaris
-
Premature or accelerated skin aging
-
Skin concerns that have not responded adequately to skincare alone
Because these concerns may be influenced by multiple overlapping factors, recommendations are personalized according to your history, current presentation, previous treatments, lifestyle, skincare routine, and overall health patterns.

Not every concern requires extensive testing or a complex treatment plan. Our goal is to identify the most relevant priorities and create a thoughtful, realistic plan of care.

Our Layered Approach

Complex skin concerns rarely develop from one isolated factor. What appears on the surface may be influenced by several overlapping layers, including skincare practices, skin-barrier health, inflammation, nutrition, digestion, hormones, stress, sleep, lifestyle, environmental exposures, and individual health history.

At Integrative Aesthetics Boston, we organize care through our five-part Peel the Orange Method:

1. Avoid
We begin by identifying and reducing the factors that may be aggravating the skin or interfering with progress. These may include irritating products, over-exfoliation, incompatible treatments, environmental exposures, repetitive habits, dietary patterns, or other individualized triggers.

2. Fundamentals
We strengthen the foundations that support healthy skin and whole-body regulation. Depending on the client, this may include nutrition, hydration, restorative sleep, movement, stress regulation, digestion, elimination, and a consistent home-care routine.

3. Protect
We protect vulnerable skin from continued damage through customized barrier-supportive skincare, appropriate sun and visible-light protection, gentle treatment pacing, and strategies that reduce irritation, picking, friction, and unnecessary inflammation.
4. Repair
We support the restoration of what has become depleted, disrupted, or compromised. Recommendations may include skin-barrier repair, nutrient repletion, digestive and microbiome support, hormonal or metabolic evaluation, and regenerative skin therapies when appropriate.

5. Correct
Once the appropriate foundations are in place, we use focused strategies to address the remaining concern. This may include professional skincare protocols, targeted supplements, prescription therapies when clinically appropriate, corrective treatments, collagen-remodeling procedures, or regenerative aesthetics.

Avoid what is aggravating. Build the fundamentals. Protect what is vulnerable. Repair what has been disrupted. Correct what remains.

Not every client will require every intervention, and the process is not always perfectly linear. Your plan is personalized according to your history, findings, priorities, and response to care.
What May Be Explored During Your Functional Evaluation
Your skin and scalp concerns are considered within the context of your broader health history, previous treatments, daily habits, and current symptoms.

Depending on your individual needs, the evaluation may explore:

-
Your skin or scalp history and the progression of your concerns
-
Current and previous skincare products and professional treatments
-
Prescription medication and supplement history
-
Dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and hydration
-
Digestive function and bowel regularity
-
Menstrual, hormonal, perimenopausal, or menopausal patterns
-
Sleep quality, stress, movement, and recovery
-
Environmental, occupational, and lifestyle exposures
-
Previous laboratory findings and relevant medical history
-
The potential need for additional wellness testing or referral to another healthcare professional
Any recommendation for laboratory or specialty testing is based on your history, current concerns, previous results, and whether the information is likely to meaningfully guide your care plan. The purpose of the evaluation is not to search endlessly for problems. It is to identify the most relevant patterns, establish priorities, and create a thoughtful path forward.
What to Expect From Your Initial Functional Evaluation
Your initial Functional Evaluation (90-120 minutes) is a comprehensive appointment designed to understand your skin or scalp concerns in the context of your health history, prior treatments, daily habits, and personal goals. During this visit, we review your intake forms, discuss your concerns in detail, and assess any previous lab work you may have. We also evaluate your current skincare or scalp-care routine, the progression of your symptoms, and perform a detailed skin analysis to better understand your skin’s current condition and needs. Our approach is rooted in clarity and intention—we focus on understanding the full picture rather than guessing.

Depending on your needs, your personalized recommendations may include:

-
A customized at-home skincare routine tailored to your skin or scalp needs
-
Nutrition and lifestyle guidance
-
Professional skin or scalp treatment recommendations (if needed)
-
Targeted supplement support when appropriate
-
Prescription treatment when clinically indicated
-
Review of prior lab work and recommendations for updated testing when needed
-
Referrals to appropriate medical specialists when necessary
-
A phased follow-up and reassessment plan
Not all recommendations are introduced at once. Care is prioritized and structured in stages to ensure the plan is realistic, focused, and easy to follow. Your evaluation marks the beginning of a collaborative, investigative process—not a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Recommendations may evolve as we gather more information and monitor how your skin and body respond over time.
Who May Benefit From a Functional Dermatology Evaluation?
A Functional Dermatology Evaluation may be appropriate for individuals who:

-
Experience persistent or recurring acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, pigmentation, scalp concerns, or hair thinning
-
Continue to experience flare-ups despite changing skincare products or trying multiple treatments
-
Notice that their skin changes alongside digestion, menstrual cycles, hormonal shifts, stress, sleep disruption, diet, or environmental exposures
-
Have used prescriptions, professional treatments, or extensive skincare routines without a clear long-term strategy
-
Want to better understand the internal and external factors that may be influencing their skin
-
Are seeking a personalized plan that combines professional skincare, functional assessment, nutrition and lifestyle support, and corrective treatment
-
Are willing to participate actively and consistently in the process
This approach may be especially helpful for individuals who feel they have “tried everything” but have not yet had their history, lifestyle, skincare, symptoms, and previous testing evaluated together.
Functional dermatology does not replace emergency care, primary care, or board-certified dermatology. When a concern requires urgent evaluation, diagnosis, biopsy, imaging, or treatment outside our scope, we will recommend referral to or collaboration with the appropriate medical professional.
